What makes a roof standing seam?

Standing-seam roofing uses metal panels joined along raised seams—the lines you see running down the roof. Many systems hide their attachment points beneath the panels or seams. Ask the contractor which product is proposed, how it attaches, and what layers go underneath it. A similar appearance does not mean two roofs are built the same way.

Panels and seams

Raised joints connect the panels. Similar-looking roofs can use different joining methods.

Edges and openings

Vents, skylights, and wall junctions need their own water-shedding details.

What goes underneath

Protective layers, support, and attachments must suit the selected product and roof slope.
